History:
The crossroads town of St Mere Eglise was given as the primary objective for the U.S. 82nd
Airborne Division on D-Day, June 6,1944. Major General Matthew Ridgeway assigned the 505th
Parachute Infantry Regiment to capture the village. Unfortunately, about 30 paratroopers
landed directly in the town with one being caught on the church steeple by his parachute. He
remained there for two and a half hours before being rescued (and captured) by German
soldiers.
The assault from the remainder of the Regiment (that had landed outside the town) was
assigned to the 3rd Battalion under Lieut. Colonel Edward Krause and the town was secured
with little effort.
The real battle for the town began a few hours later when the Germans, who had been taken by
surprise, counterattacked. At the end of the hard fought day, St. Mere Eglise remained in
American hands.
